A few kilometers from Lake Ledro, Lake Ampola is a biotope of great importance for the biodiversity of the area. The lake is considered one of the most important in Trentino, thanks to its great variety of habitats and species that live there.
Discovering nature
The Lake Ampola biotope covers an area of about 1.5 sq km, and it has been protected since 1985, to preserve its exceptional biodiversity. Surrounded by a large wetland area, it is the ideal habitat for many plant species: you can find aquatic plants, such as water lilies, water buttercups and marsh reeds. There are also many animal species living in Lake Ampola, including numerous birds, like coots, mallards, reed warblers and moorhens, amphibians such as mountain frogs and common toads, but also grass snakes.
The Lake Ampola Visitor Center
To get to know this natural heritage up close, walk along the loop path, up to the Visitor Center known as “Beati come rane su una foglia di ninfea” (blessed like frogs on a water lily leaf). Here you will learn about aquatic micro-environments, small and rare insects, thanks to an installation designed to stimulate curiosity.
